#NorfolkDay Friday 27 July Walk to Walsingham
Norfolk Day Friday 27th July: Walk the Old Pilgrims’ Way to Walsingham
As part of the celebrations for #NorfolkDay on Friday 27th July, Norwich Cathedral and CPRE Norfolk have teamed up to offer a beautiful early morning walk along part of the old pilgrims’ route to Walsingham as a taster in anticipation of the opening up of the whole of the route as part of The Walsingham Way Initiative.
The walk, which will be conducted at a gentle pace, will start at 6.30am from
St. Andrew’s Church Great Ryburgh NR21 ODX. There is parking available. The route will pass through Great and Little Snoring, with an opportunity to visit the beautiful mediaeval churches of St. Andrew’s and St. Mary the Virgin along the way, before approaching Walsingham along a green lane (approximately nine miles).
The aim is to arrive around 8.30/9am and head for breakfast at the Norton Rooms within the Anglican Shrine NR22 6EE. After breakfast there will be short talks in the Norton Rooms on the history of Walsingham, The Walsingham Way Initiative’s plans to develop a long distance pilgrim trail and how this fits with CPRE’s ’A Vision for Norfolk’. After that, you are free to explore the village and discover all the lovely things there are to do. CPRE members can have 2 for 1 access to the Abbey Grounds with their membership card.
A minibus shuttle is kindly being laid on between 10am and 12noon by The Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady to drive walkers back from outside the Norton Rooms to the start of the walk at Great Ryburgh to pick up their cars. If you prefer, you can use Tiny’s Taxis (01328 888888) at your own expense.
There are three parts to this event and you may take part in one, two or all of them:
- Camp out the night before in the beautiful grounds of Andrew’s Church Great Ryburgh. There are simple washing and lavatory arrangements and the church will provide you with a delicious, simple, wholesome supper (including a vegetarian option) at 7pm. The cost for camping and supper is £5 per head. You may park in the nearby car park.
- The cost for participating in the walk is £5 for adults to cover expenses (under 16s are free). Walkers will need to pay for their own breakfast but please let us know in the booking form so that we can provide numbers to the Cafe for catering purposes.
- After breakfast you can listen to an hour of talks from 10-11am:
a) History of Walsingham by Historian Scilla Landale
b) The Walsingham Way Initiative by Father Andreas, Anglican National Shrine and Gail Mayhew, The Walsingham Way Initiative
c) A Vision for Norfolk v4n.org.uk by CPRE Norfolk Chairman Chris Dady
The cost for this is free and there is no need for a ticket although if you wish you may make a donation to be divided between The Walsingham Way Initiative and CPRE Norfolk.
Income from the day will be divided between St. Andrew’s Church, Norwich Cathedral, CPRE Norfolk and The Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady.
